How do I write my own vows?

Wedding couple

Vows. Some couples can't wait to write their own and others are counting down the moments until that part of the day is over! Everybody feels differently about vows. For some it is a key part of the wedding but for others they don't want to say anything longer than 'I do'.

There's nothing wrong with either! It's your wedding day so do what makes you most comfortable. Today I'm going to focus on tips for those who DO want to write their own vows but maybe are daunted by the task ahead of them or just a little lost on where to start.

Here are my top tips!

1. Attend your friends' weddings with a notepad. During the ceremony take note of vows or lines that you like - could be something to incorporate in your own.

2. Keep a notepad by the bed. Write down little ideas that come to mind. Don't be afraid to write EVERYTHING down. Even if you don't use it, it's nice to have the memories of things you remembered while writing your vows.

3. Set a word limit. This is especially handy if you're going to have a partner that does a short speech, making sure yours isn't too different in length.

4. Use templates and google for ideas. Don't be afraid to search for inspiration. There are heaps of great examples online!

5. Don't completely plagiarize. You can use Grey's Anatomy quotes for inspiration but don't just read out all the words to "you're my person" and call it a day. Your vows should be personal to you and your partner.

6. Send your vows to your celebrant beforehand. This way they can check everything is included that needs to be and give you feedback if you want it.

If in doubt or feeling very stuck, write five things you love about your partner and five promises to them. That's a great starting point!

The only legal line that must be in your vows is: "I [name] take you [name] to be my husband/wife/partner". Everything else is up to you!

7. Practice reading them aloud. It helps you time them and get comfortable with the words. On the day, try to look up from the page occasionally to make eye contact with your partner - it makes it so much more meaningful.

Good luck with the writing & do sing out if you want a hand.
